At the dawn of the third year of Europeana Sounds program, all the partners were invited to the final workshop held in Dublin on 28 and 29 April 2016.

This annual event is always eagerly awaited by the European partners because it’s a real opportunity for all participants to be trained to work together efficiently using tools developed by the program. For this latter practical workshop, we were welcomed into the Clasac resource Center led by the Irish organization Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann¹.

During these days, three main areas were discussed:
– The aggregation of MINT² data and the display on the Europeana portal (WP1 and WP5)
– Data enrichment and participation (WP2)
– Point on licensing (WP3)

The meeting was an opportunity to take stock of the project’s second year. The overall goal published on Europeana platform of 250,000 records has been achieved, and by January 2017, this figure is expected to double with a total of 500 000 records. Statistical tools in place are very encouraging since in Europeana statistics dashboard space, attendance in 2016 is constantly increasing.
For the MMSH record library, there are are more than 1,500 views over 3,500 online references.

1. Data aggregation on MINT and the display on Europeana portal
Since the previous workshop in July 2015, much progress has been made.If the procedure on the mapping tool MINT is still the same³, the beta version of Europeana platform is moving toward a more ergonomic display with a data tree . Thus, from a qualitative point of view, sound archives data modeling has been used as a model at the presentation by Tom Miles, WP1 leader.

Finally , work on the metadata quality led by the Europeana Digital Service Infrastructure (DSI) was reported by a member of the group, Anila Angjeli, from the BnF.

2. Data enrichment and participation (WP2)
The second day of the workshop was mainly devoted to the enrichment of music collections by users. With the development of the WITH platform⁴, users can now annotate these sounds on Europeana via the dedicated space : Space Sounds. This space allows the creation of virtual exhibitions and collections that can be annotated with the Pundit semantic annotation tool. This collaborative tool is linked to the common repository for MIMO⁵ musical instruments and generates keywords (or tags) as RDF triples, which enable Semantic Web⁶ integration. In the near future, the Pundit annotation widget could be integrated directly on the institutions of the database. Collaborative modules on Europeana will soon be extended beyond the musical instruments, to annotate descriptive genres (directly from collections) and locations (via the new features Historypin: location suggestions and Historypin API).

Finally, before summer 2016, a crowdsourcing campaign will be launched to encourage fortification around those collections with specific events (edit -a-thon, hackathon, exhibitions…). Depending on the level of involvement of institutions in this campaign, different levels will be awarded: Bronze = selection of collections suitable for enrichment ; Silver = pre-processing of these collections ; Gold = implementation of the annotation widget on institutional database.

3. Point on licensing (WP3)
The issue of licenses was discussed with a novelty website, offering 11 standard declarations of rights for online cultural heritage. These proposals are organised as a complement to the Creative Commons licenses, and are organised into 3 categories: Copyright In, No Copyright, Other (for objects whose status is unknown). There is also a withdrawn license: Rights Reserved & Paid Access. This removal demonstrates the willingness of Europeana to propose only open access materials. These new titles will be updated in the Terms and Conditions of Europeana.

Finally, we note the integration of new European partners in the Europeana project sounds : The Fryderyk Chopin Institute (Poland),  Dublin Institute of Technology (Ireland), CRESSON – National School of Architecture of Grenoble (France). The participation of ENSAG involves the Centre for Research on Sonic Space & Urban Environment (CRESSON) as a unit of the CNRS UMR 1563 through the ” architectural and urban atmospheres”.In this context, the sound archives of the MMSH contributes to the launch of aggregation of the ENSAG data during the month of May 2016.

Metadata INTeroperability services, MINT services compose a web based platform that was designed and developed to facilitate aggregation initiatives for cultural heritage content and metadata in Europe.
